The first new Monterey Library building in the 20th century was built at the corner of Van Buren and Franklin streets in 1910-11. It was made possible by a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie's trust fund for "free public libraries", the first of the wealthy steel industrialist's public endowment programs. Many of the clippings were compiled during the 1930s and 1940s. These were incorporated into the present file dating from the 1950s, with the staff making substantial additions until the file was closed to clippings from the Monterey County Herald in 1995.
